J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars Episode VII

My friends know me too well.  In the past week,  I’ve received a dozen emails/FB messages about the latest news on J.J. Abrams directing Star Wars Episode VII.  Everyone wanted to know what I think about it, if I’m excited, isn’t it great?

The truth is, I’m not really sure.  Why?

I have watched exactly two things JJ Abrams has played a part in:  Felicity and Armageddon.  Not exactly the same genre as Star Wars.  I mean, sure Armageddon had to do with space, but we really all just watched for Ben Affleck and the Aerosmith song.  And Felicity? I watched for the other Ben (Scott Speedman).  Felicity ended ten friggin years ago and I’m pretty sure I stopped watching it when Keri Russel cut her hair.  I don’t have anything new and relevant on which to  judge his worthiness to produce Episode VII.  George Lucas seems pleased with the choice, which should be good enough for me.

As for the other things Abrams is famous for, like LOST (or is it simply “Lost”? Google is conflicted), Fringe, Alias and Star Trek?  Yeah, not my thing.  I’m big on jumping on show bandwagons, so naturally I started watching LOST with the rest of the universe, but I never made it past the first few episodes.  And I’ve never been a Trek fan.  My geekery universe lives in the galaxies far, far away of Star Wars.

You can go ahead and take away my cool kid card (if I ever owned one).

So where does this leave me?  Nervous of the unknown, curious as to how it plays out and hungering for more information.  I know Abrams is notorious for keeping the details of his shows/films as secret as possible, which drives many fans mad in this age of social media where fans feel entitled to be a part of every step of the creative process.  I appreciate his secrecy and enjoy seeing a film I don’t know every detail about ahead of time.

I guess all I can do is sit and wait for more details to play out.  Honestly, I’m more concerned with the storyline and cast at this point.  And praying to the Force that Jar Jar doesn’t exist in a post-Return of the Jedi world.   I’m excited for the new film and my kids are bursting at the seams for it to release next year.

What are your thoughts on this latest announcement?

  1. I am excited because TBH I really loved the newest Star Trek movie – and I am not a Trekkie by any means (not that I am a hater, I just don’t get it). LOL!

  2. ::cool kid card taken away::

I actually never watched Alias or Felciity, but I’m a huge J.J Abrams fan because LOST (which is how I type it,LOL!) was/is my favorite show and I really loved the new Star Trek, Cloverfield, Fringe, etc.

I think he has a GREAT team that he works with and I’m excited to see what they will bring to Star Wars. Like you said also, I love that he keeps things a secret too which is so hard these days.

Have you seen Super 8?! Such a good movie!

    • No, I never saw Super 8! I never got to the movies to see it and just never rented it. I know, I totally suck. Maybe I’ll rent Star Trek and give the new film a chance this summer. I have a lot of catching up to do over the next year!

  3. Okay, I have to admit Star Wars lost me with the last 3 {I think it was 3} prequels they made and I HATED them. And my other confession is that I actually had to look up who J.J. Abrams was. I didn’t watch any of his shows and other then Armageddon didn’t recognize the movies either. But i am curious to see how this movie will pan out. I loved the original Star Wars and I am hoping he pulls it off like them.

    • Try the prequels again. At least Episode III. While I can’t stand Episode I, my kids love Episodes II & III and I’m a big fan of the end of Episode III. Best lightsaber battles and Anakin transforming to Darth Vader is pretty awesome. I’ve also become a huge fan of the Clone Wars animated series, which takes place between Episodes II & III.

  4. I think I’ll let you keep your cool kid card ;) Change can be good and I think this is a step in the right direction! Keeping my fingers crossed

  5. I really like JJ Abrams and his outside the box thinking. I’m not sure how he will fit into the Star Wars mold though but I’m interested in seeing the movie to find out.

  6. i’m SUPER excited! I’m a huge Star Wars fan and an even bigger J.J. Abrams fan. I think it’s the right choice.

  7. No cool kid card for me… I’ve never liked Star Wars. Imagine that! I loved LOST though, so if he’s as meticulous as that show, it should be all good.

  8. I think he’ll bring something totally new and unexpected to the franchise. It’s a good move!

  9. I think “the Force is with Abrams” and he’s proven that with his ability to revive Star Trek. I look forward to seeing it

  10. ….no opinion yet……

  11. I’m very interested to see how his take of the story line will come through on screen!

  12. It will definitely be interesting to see where he takes it! We’re nervous too, but cautiously optimistic!
